Archdeacon installed at St Fachtna’s Cathedral, Rosscarbery

Last Sunday, 2nd July 2023, the Archdeacon of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, the Ven. Andrew Orr was installed into his stall at St Fachtna’s Cathedral, Rosscarbery. The Choir of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork visited Ross Cathedral for the occasion to sing Choral Evensong under the direction of Peter Stobart and with Matthew Breen, Assistant Director of Music, on the organ. The Rev. Canon Elaine Murray, Rector of Carrigaline Union and Prebend of Timoleague on the Chapter of St Fachtna’s Cathedral, read the mandate and the Dean of Ross, the Very Rev. Cliff Jeffers, installed the Archdeacon into his stall.

The Archdeacon was supported by a gathering of family members, members of the cathedral Chapter and members of the cathedral congregation. After the service the congregation, choir and clergy were all invited to a barbecue in the Deanery.

Fanlobbus Union welcomes their new Incumbent

On Wednesday evening, 28th June 2023, the Rev. Adam Pullen was instituted as the new Incumbent of Fanlobbus Union by the Bishop, the Right Rev. Dr Paul Colton, at St Mary’s Church, Dunmanway.

St Mary’s Church was full for the occasion with parishioners, clergy and readers from the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, as well as guests from Adam’s previous parish, Stranorlar in the Diocese of Raphoe. Also present were ecumenical guests, and representatives of the community.

The Rev. Adam Pullen was presented to the Bishop by the Archdeacon, the Venerable Andrew Orr and the preacher at the service was the Rev. Ian Jonas, former Incumbent of Carrigrohane Union of Parishes. After the service, speeches were given by the Bishop, as well as by Gillian Kingston on behalf of the parishioners of Fanlobbus Union.

Following the speeches, the new incumbent spoke to the congregation and thanked everyone for their warm welcome. Afterwards everyone enjoyed the hospitality of the Parish in the Cox Hall in Dunmanway.

Appointment of Dean’s Vicar at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral

The Dean of Cork, the Very Rev. Nigel Dunne has today announced the appointment of the Rev. Martin Steele as Dean’s Vicar at Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral.

The Rev. Steele is a native of Belfast (Diocese of Connor) and was educated at the University of Aberdeen (B.D.), St John’s College Nottingham (Prof. Cert. Min.) and trained at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute/Trinity College Dublin (M.TS). He served his Diaconal Placement Year in Killala and Kilmoremoy Group of Parishes (Diocese of Tuam, Limerick and Killaloe). His main areas of interest in ministry are liturgy, pastoral care and service and he is a member of the Society of St Willibrord and of the Anglican-Lutheran Society. Among his wider interests is his love of football, being a season ticket holder with Crusaders Football Club and he is already seeking a season ticket for Cork City FC!

Announcing the appointment the Dean said:

I am delighted to announce that following my nomination of Martin to Bishop Colton yesterday, I have appointed him as Dean’s Vicar. I have no doubt that his obvious love of liturgy and music alongside his deep understanding of pastoral care and the need to nurture people in their faith will greatly enhance the Cathedral’s life and witness.

The Rev. Steele will arrive in Cork at the beginning of August with his installation taking place at the
11.15am Eucharist on Sunday 6th. He will be ordained to the priesthood in the autumn.

Confirmations in Cork, Cloyne and Ross in 2023

Over the past few months 72 young people from 13 parishes have been confirmed by the Bishop in the United Dioceses of Cork, Cloyne and Ross at 10 Confirmation Services.

The Bishop said:

Confirmation ‘season’ is always a time of great joy and enrichment in the Diocese. I love meeting everyone who is stepping up to be confirmed and also, of course, their families. I warmly congratulate all those who were confirmed this year and wish them every blessing as they continue on their journey of faith and discipleship.

Late-Evening service of Compline resumes at idyllic St Brendan’s Church, Crookhaven

The most southerly chapel in Ireland, St Brendan’s Church in Crookhaven, resumes its late-evening service of Compline every Sunday in July and August. The services will begin at 8.30pm and the small stone chapel, which was built in 1717, welcomes all denominations and anyone who is on holidays or visiting West Cork.

The site of St Brendan’s Church has been a place of worship since the Early Middle Ages and the structure of the present day building is very much the same from the early 18th century. There is no electricity supply at the chapel – the lighting is natural during the day and comes from candles and gas lights at dusk, creating the atmospheric setting that St Brendan’s is well-known for.
