Two Cork Parishes in Dramatic Enterprise

On the 9th, 10th and 11th November Douglas Union of Parishes with Frankfield, together with Carrigaline Union held Theatre Supper Evenings.  They put on two hilarious plays, ‘A Fishy Business’ by Margaret Wood and ‘Gosforth’s Fete’ by Alan Ayckbourne.  The audience were treated to three highly enjoyable nights with great food, wine and entertainment.  It was wonderful to experience the two unions of parishes working so well together and great to see a strengthening of bonds between near neighbours.

Mothers’ Union in Cork, Cloyne and Ross Plant a Tree to Celebrate 13 Decades of Service

On Saturday, 11 November, the Mothers’ Union in Cork, Cloyne and Ross held the meeting of their   Diocesan Council in Northridge House.  As part of the day they planted a tree in the grounds of St Luke’s Home to commemorate and to celebrate thirteen decades of love and service: 130 years of Mothers’ Union in Ireland!

All-Ireland President of the Mothers’ Union, Phyllis Grothier is briefed about tree-planting by the Reverend Bruce Pierce.

Members were delighted that Phyllis Grothier, All Ireland President, was present to speak at the meeting and to plant the tree.  Everyone was grateful for the assistance of the Rev Bruce Pierce and the presence of Joan Hanna, a director of St Luke’s Home and a member of the Mothers’ Union.

The Mothers’ Union in each of the 12 dioceses in Ireland has planted a tree – with the 13th tree for the 13 decades being an All-Ireland tree.  Many have been planted in church or cathedral grounds, but Cork, Cloyne and Ross were very happy to plant its tree in St Luke’s Home – a place and charity dear to the hearts of so many of throughout the whole Diocese and the wider community.

Cork Jazz Festival in St Anne’s, Shandon, Cork

On 29th October Harvest Thanksgiving was celebrated in St. Anne’s Church, Shandon, Cork coinciding as usual with the ‘Jazz Festival weekend’. The church was full to capacity with parishioners, friends and visitors coming together to give thanks for harvest and celebrate through music on this 40th year of the Cork Guinness Jazz Festival. Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Tony Fitzgerald and Fiona Collins from the Cork Guinness Jazz Festival Committee, read the lessons.

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Tony Fitzgerald and the Lady Mayoress are greeted by the Reverend Sarah Marry, Priest-in-Charge.

Archdeacon Andrew Orr

The Archdeacon of Ossory and Leighlin, the Venerable Andrew Orr preached from his experience as the Chair of Eco- Congregation Ireland, an organisation that seeks to support and encourage churches to take an ‘eco approach’ to all they do.   Archdeacon Orr encouraged making small changes as individuals and as churches using resources responsibly and working together on issues of climate change which, as he noted, are essentially issues of peace and justice. The Climate Justice Candle was lit in St. Anne’s for the service as it concluded its travels around Cork having already been at the Carrigaline Union Harvest Thanksgiving, the Cork, Cloyne and Ross clergy conference and a Douglas Churches Together event about climate change.

The New York Brass Band and St. John’s Gospel Choir along with organist Adam Nuzum created a vibrant atmosphere in the beautifully decorated church teeming with fruit and vegetables. This year all those who attended were invited to bring along a non-perishable food item to add to the delivery of edible decorations to Cork Penny Dinners.

Jazz on the church steps

The children of St. Luke’s School wowed with their performance of ‘The Fruits of the Land’. Their hard work under the direction of Peter Stobart and their teachers paid off on the day and everyone enjoyed their talent and enthusiasm!

A collection was taken for the mission and ministry of St. Anne’s as well as for COPE locally and for the work of Christian Aid further afield.
