Confirmation at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral

After many postponements, a confirmation service was finally held at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral on 6th November 2021. Fifteen young people came from the cathedral parish, as well as from Cobh and Glanmire Union, and Abbeystrewry Union to be confirmed by the Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, Dr Paul Colton.

The Rev. Ted Ardis, Dean’s Vicar at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, said:

The confirmation on 6th November was a great day for us as a cathedral as well as for the candidates themselves. We were very touched to receive a personal note from one parent outside the parish, saying, “It was great to get our child confirmed and to enjoy the beautiful venue and divine music.” The ‘divine music’ was provided by the adult members of the choir with our Director of Music and Assistant Director of Music, whom we thank. What made it all so personal was the friendly manner of our bishop, who made the service truly a celebration of the gift and call from our loving God.

Bishop Paul Colton announces Diocesan Synod will be held online

On Monday, 8th November 2021,  the Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, Dr Paul Colton, announced that the annual Diocesan Synod, involving clergy and lay representatives from the Diocese, will not be held in person as originally planned, but will now take place online on Saturday 27th November at 11 a.m. instead, using video conferencing facilities.

Bishop Paul Colton

Writing to the clergy and lay members of the Cork, Cloyne and Ross Diocesan Synod, Bishop Colton explained that one of the responsibilities of the Bishop of the Diocese is to summon the annual Diocesan Synod and, in so doing, to decide when and where it will meet.

Bishop Colton said:

‘When I planned this year’s meeting for 27th November and arranged for it to be held in person in the Rochestown Park Hotel, I was looking forward, after an extended period of not gathering in a way that is so vital and energising for our life and fellowship as a Diocese, to being in the same room with you all once again.  I fully expected that I was safe in choosing what was then a distant date.’

‘We now know, however, that the trajectory of the Coronavirus Pandemic is more volatile and complex than we anticipated.  From news reports we know that we are still not living in a settled and safe period. Moreover, we are all, particularly those of us in certain age groups, being urged to take personal responsibility and to restrict our contact with one another.’

‘Taking all this into account and being conscious of my pastoral responsibility as your Bishop, I have decided not to pursue a course that might be imprudent or which might lead you into jeopardy. I have decided, with disappointment it has to be said, that the wise course of action is that we should not meet in person this year, once again, but that a brief functional meeting should take place using video conferencing facilities instead.’

Blessing of Mothers’ Union Banner in St Mary & All Saints, Glanmire

On 31st October, in St Mary & All Saints’ Church, Cobh and Glanmire Union of Parishes, the parish’s new Mothers’ Union banner was blessed by the Rector, the Rev’d Paul Arbuthnot. This was a part of the Patronal Festival Eucharist for All Saints’ Day in Glanmire.

The banner was presented by three long serving members of the branch from each of the churches in the parish: John Sweetnam (Glanmire), June Bollard (Cobh), and Sandra Carson (Little Island). Much of the needlework on the banner was completed by Shirley Walkin, a churchwarden in Christ Church, Rushbrooke (Cobh).

Mrs Hilary Dring, the Diocesan President of the Mothers’ Union was in attendance. She addressed the congregation, updating them on the work that the Mothers’ Union is doing across the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross. At the end of the service, the Branch President of the Mothers’ Union, Mrs Hazel Sweetnam, thanked all those who had worked on the banner and who sustain the life of the Mothers’ Union in the parish. The service also coincided with the parish’s annual Gift Day, which raised vital funds to sustain the life and witness of the parish in the community.

The Rev’d Paul Arbuthnot commented:

The Mothers’ Union is very much the heartbeat of our parish life. We are all very grateful to Hazel Sweetnam, our Branch President, for all the work she does in coordinating the Mothers’ Union in this parish. The new banner is testament to the skill of those who made it, and to the lively faith which exudes from the branch members. Also, on this our Gift Day and Patronal Festival, we give high and hearty thanks to God for all members of our parish, for all that has been, all that is, and all that is to come.

Canon Denis McCarthy said:

It was an honour to be installed by the Very Rev. Susan Green, Dean of Cloyne, as Prebendary of Donoughmore on the Chapter of St. Colman’s Cathedral. I would like to thank the Cathedral Chapter for their support, as well as my fellow clergy, the parishioners of Cloyne who attended the service, the organist Dr Ian Sexton and the choir who sang beautifully throughout the service. I am particularly pleased to occupy the Prebendary of Donoughmore, as my Church of Ireland ancestors hailed from there and now it feels as if the circle is complete.
