Annual Table Quiz for Cork Diocesan Youth

CDYC were able to hold their Annual Table Quiz in the Carraig Centre in Ballincollig back in November. On the night there were two different groups, one with young people from first to third year and the other from fourth to sixth year.

Diocesan Youth Officer Hilda Connolly said:

There was some fierce rivalry between the teams, but all done in great jest. Some of the CDYC leaders were on hand on the night to help with cooking pizza, correcting, and gathering sheets. Some members even put together a few of the rounds – some more difficult than others, but it is always good to throw a curve ball in there. The Carraig Centre was a great venue. The Rev. Ferris welcomed the group and helped with the more technical aspects too!

It was CDYC’s first indoor event since before the Covid-19 pandemic. As it was a table quiz, the teens could sit in small groups and keep within their pods, adhering to current health guidelines.

Cork, Cloyne and Ross is on Instagram!

As of Tuesday, 30th November 2021, the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross has an account on Instagram.

Denise Brueckl, Media and IT officer for the diocese, writes:

I am really excited to finally start posting on Instagram. Different social media platforms attract different groups of people. I feel that especially for people in my generation Instagram is a primary source of connection, interaction and inspiration. These three aspects, I believe, are also of fundamental importance to the communication in the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross and everywhere for that matter.

Like on Facebook and Twitter, we will be sharing news, photos and videos on Instagram and I hope to show a new audience the many wonderful aspects of our diocese.

Advent message from Bishop Paul Colton

On Advent Sunday, 28th November 2021, the Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, Dr Paul Colton, sent a pastoral message to the people of the diocese.

Bishop Colton writes:

Today, Advent Sunday, we begin a new year.  It is the third year in our three year cycle – Year C – the year when the Gospel readings are predominantly from the Gospel according to Saint Luke. This morning you heard ‘be on guard…’ ‘Be alert…’ (Luke 21.25-36) – the Advent themes of joyful yet solemn anticipation and expectation.

It strikes me, however, that our second reading this morning from Saint Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians, the first ever of his letters to be written, c. 52 A.D., has fortuitously something particular to say to us (as the lectionary usually does). Certainly, from that reading (1 Thessalonians 3.9-13) I would want to echo to you his words of gratitude:

‘How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you?’ 

And I know too that we all can relate strongly to the desire Saint Paul had in relation to the people of Thessalonika – even though our reasons might be different; our longing to meet face to face:

‘Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face …’

Saint Paul’s threefold prayer, set out in that letter, is my prayer for all of us, for you and for me, as we begin this new year and as we set out on our Advent journey, in these times:

First, in verse 11, may God direct our way:

‘Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you.’

Second, in verse 12, may God increase our love for one another and for all:

‘And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you.’ 

Third, in verse 13, may God strengthen our hearts in holiness:

‘And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness’

At our online Diocesan Synod, I asked each and every person present to be a messenger for me to all of you. On that last day of the Church’s liturgical year, my message was simply ‘thank you’.  Thank you to each and every one of you for all that you are and all that you do, most especially in these demanding and fretful times.

Commissioning of Lay Local Minister

On Saturday, 13th November, Hilary Dring was commissioned by Bishop Paul Colton for the work of a Lay Local Minister in the area of pastoral care.

Hilary said:

It was a very special occasion for me to be commissioned by the Bishop. It was the culmination of a lot of work, training and personal development, as well as a recognition by the diocese of the role I play as part of the pastoral care team at St Luke’s Home. I am delighted to be part of the Diocesan ministry team and feel very privileged to be able to serve the residents, their families and the staff at St Luke’s Home each week. A big thank you to Canon Elaine Murray for suggesting Clinical Pastoral Education to me in the first place. It has turned out to be a wonderful gift at this stage of my life.
