The Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, the Right Reverend Dr Paul Colton, has announced that, following the retirement of Archdeacon Robin Bantry White on 1st March next, the new Archdeacon of Cork, Cloyne and Ross is to be the Reverend Adrian Wilkinson.

The Reverend Adrian Wilkinson is Rector of Douglas Union of Parishes with Frankfield: parishes which include the south suburbs of Cork city and adjoining areas of County Cork, including Blackrock, Mahon, Douglas, Grange, Frankfield, Rochestown and Passage West.  It was in these same parishes that the new Archdeacon began his ministry as curate between 1994 and 1997.  Following an interlude as Rector of the Dunboyne Union of Parishes in the Diocese of Meath from 1997 to 2002, he returned to Douglas as Rector in 2002.

Archdeacons are appointed by the bishop of the diocese, and their role is to assist the bishop in his or her pastoral care of the diocese, as well as the general oversight and administration of the diocese.

Bishop Colton said:

This is a very ancient office within the Church, but one which is still of immense practical significance today.  The bishop and archdeacon work closely together, and I am delighted that Adrian Wilkinson has accepted my invitation to him to take on this additional work within his ministry.  He will bring many valuable gifts, insights, and abilities to his new role.

The Reverend Adrian Wilkinson said:

I feel very humbled to have been invited by the Bishop to take on this office within the Church, to support him in his work as Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, and also to serve the Diocese in this capacity.  It is also an immense responsibility to follow in the steps of someone of the stature of Archdeacon  Robin Bantry White who has served faithfully for over two decades.  I look forward to the task ahead.

The new Archdeacon will be installed at a Service in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral on Sunday, 30th March at 4 p.m.

Children’s Ministry Training Day for 75 Leaders in Cork, Cloyne and Ross

A group of more than seventy-five Sunday Club leaders from sixteen parishes around the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross gathered on Saturday, 8th February at St Luke’s Home Education Centre, Northridge House, Cork for a Training Day. The day was organised by the Cork branch of the Children’s Ministry Network led by the Reverend Anne Skuse.

The  theme for the day was  ‘A roadmap through Lent’.  The day opened with an introduction on this theme  of journeying. Then through  a series of lead workshops on Creative Prayer, Craft, Music, Drama, Puppetry, and Messy Church,  participants were given practical ideas and ways of helping  children to make the journey through each Sunday in Lent and then on to Easter.   Using what they had learned in the workshops, participants were then divided into groups and invited to come up with lesson plans for the six Sundays in Lent. These lesson plans will be used as a shared resource for all parishes.

This overaching theme of ‘journeying’ was picked up again in the closing liturgy entitled ‘Companions on the Journey’, which reminded us that as we travel in faith God travels with us. Our task therefore is to remember that as we accompany our children in faith, they too accompany us.

Participants were joined for the day by the Church of Ireland’s Children’s Ministry Development Officer Ms. Lydia Monds.

Hockey Management Experience for Bishop Paul Colton

In recent months, the Bishop of Cork, Dr Paul Colton, agreed to take on the role of manager of the Munster Men’s under 21 Hockey Team for the current season.  Bishop Paul said:

I was never a great hockey player myself, but in earlier days I played, and over the years I’ve spent hours and days of involvement with hockey clubs, at matches and at tournaments. I’ve often had a lot to say from the sidelines so when I was asked to take on this manager role I thought I should put my money, as it were, where my mouth has been.  I also think everyone should be involved in voluntary work in some way, and that’s a value we keep to in our own family, whether in involvement in charities, in schools or in fund-raising or support for community groups inside and outside churches. Luckily the great bunch of hockey players, many of them from clubs, schools and parishes in this Diocese, are not depending on me for coaching  – for that they can rely on the fantastic Neil Welch supported by Dave Hobbs.
