Statement from

Bishop Paul Colton on hearing the news of the death of Mr Peter Barry

The Church of Ireland Bishop of Cork, the Right Reverend Dr Paul Colton, has issued the following statement upon hearing the news of the death in Cork of former Tánaiste and former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Peter Barry:

I am sad indeed to hear the news of the death of Peter Barry, former Tánaiste, former Minister for Foreign Affairs, former Lord Mayor of Cork, and Freeman of Cork.  As a child and teenager growing up in Cork, I remember well his calling to the door to canvas for a vote.  As a recently ordained curate living in Northern Ireland in the 1980s I recall his contribution to the Anglo-Irish Agreement. As Church of Ireland Bishop of Cork, like my predecessors in this office, I have appreciated his friendship and support for the Church of Ireland in this Diocese over many years.

On behalf of us all in the United Dioceses of Cork, Cloyne and Ross I extend our deepest sympathy and assurance of our prayers to Mr Barry’s family, and most especially to his daughter Deirdre Clune, M.E.P., and her husband Conor who has been, first a neighbour, and family friend here in Cork since the 1960s, and to all their family circle.  I also extend my sympathy to all Mr Barry’s political colleagues.

– Ends –

Carrigaline and Crosshaven Holiday Club for Children

Carrigaline Union and Templebreedy Group of Parishes in the Diocese of Cork, held a joint Holiday Club for the fifth successive year last week in St Mary’s National School Carrigaline.

Forty children and twenty teen helpers (plus ‘Adult’ leaders!) exhausted themselves learning all about the story of Joseph, his many coloured coat, his many brothers and his many adventures – all presented within a ‘Cops & Robbers’ theme!

The Revd Isobel Jackson and the Reverend Elaine Murray who organised the holiday club said:

We would invite and encourage anyone thinking of running a Holiday Club in their parish to contact us for pointers. It really is a great way of connecting with the teens in your parish as well as teaching the children.

Midleton College Student Teaches Neymar How To Play Golf for Olympic Ad

Agueda Cortilla Mas, from Barcelona in Spain, a past pupil of Midleton College, in the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, is hitting the headlines alongside professional footballer Neymar Jr (Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior) from Brazil ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Sports journalist, Gavin Spillane, writing in the Irish Examiner, reported on Friday that she recently starred alongside Neymar in a Panasonic advertisement recorded before the Olympics.  Gavin Spillane’s full report is here.  Panasonic make an advertisement every year with Neymar Jr playing a random sport.  Agueda Cortilla Mas plays golf off a 0.5 handicap and, following auditions, she was selected.

Explaining the Midleton College connection she said to Mr Spillane:

My parents thought it was important for me to learn English as it was very bad. So they decided to send me abroad because it’s the best way to learn it and I also needed to have some time off from golf. I decided to come to Ireland and I ended up in Midleton College, where I had the best year of my life. I made some of my best friends there. I even learned to play hockey and spent the last three months with East Cork Golf Club as I needed to touch a club again after six months.
