Cork Church of Ireland Primary Schools – New ‘Prayer Leaf’ Link with Hospital Chaplaincy

The Chapel of Christ the Healer at Cork University Hospital has launched a new ‘Prayer-Leaf’ project with the Primary Schools in the Dioceses of Cork, Cloyne and Ross. This venture is providing primary school children with an opportunity to offer a tangible contribution of prayer leaves to be used by patients, visitors and staff at Cork University Hospital.

The Chapel of Christ the Healer, located on the main concourse of Cork University Hospital has many visitors every day and is an oasis of calm in the midst of one of Ireland’s busiest hospitals.

Primary school children across the diocese are invited to make prayer leaves as part of an outreach initiative between schools and healthcare chaplaincy where children can reflect on health and illness. An educational pack with lesson plans for both Junior Infants -2nd class and 3rd class-6th class have been provided by Ms Jacqui Wilkinson, Lecturer in Religious Education at Dublin City University to complement the existing Follow Me© Religious Education programme. A school assembly outline has also been produced.

Canon Daniel Nuzum, one of the Hospital Chaplains at Cork University Hospital said

We are delighted to offer this opportunity for school children to connect in a prayerful and tangible way with our patients and hospital community. The Prayer leaves have proved very popular and mean a lot to many who call into the Chapel of Christ the Healer to pray for a loved one who is ill. I am grateful to Jacqui Wilkinson for her generous work to embed this project as a learning initiative for school pupils.

The Chapel of Christ the Healer is open 24/7 and you are welcome to visit it should you be in Cork University Hospital. Chaplaincy updates can be followed on twitter @chapelcuh

Cork’s ‘Goldie Fish’ Comes Face to Face with a Lofty Crane

Cork’s ‘goldie fish’  – the distinctive salmon weather vane atop Saint Anne’s Church, Shandon in Cork – had company on Thursday 26th April.  A crane rose to lofty heights to repair the lead flashing on the dome of Shandon, Cork’s iconic landmark overlooking the River Lee.

The ‘goldie fish’ atop Saint Anne’s Church, Shandon with Saint Anne’s Park, the Heineken Brewery at Ladyswell, Cork, and Collins Barracks all in the background.

There were many concerned enquiries as to the fish’s health and much relief when assurances were given that all was well. The damage to the lead work was caused by the cumulative effects of hurricane Ophelia, and storms Brian and Emma, and took only a short time to repair once contractors had reached the appropriate height. Local residents were very accommodating of the huge crane and welcomed the care being taken of the city’s much loved building. Doors re-opened to patient visitors and tourists shortly afterwards.

The crane stretches from the ground to lofty heights for the repair work.

Dr Amanullah de Sondy, Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Islam at University College Cork, addresses the gathering

The delicious food was again supplied by the Real Olive Company in the English Market.

Enjoying the good provided by the Real Olive Company.

The aim of the Forum is to show solidarity with each other, the Creator and all of Creation. As Judaism, Christianity and Islam all share a common concern for creation, the Earth Day Celebration is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the need for all to live in right relationship with the Earth and to collaborate with each other in order to address the causes of climate and ecological degradation.
