Maundy Thursday/Holy Thursday – 1st April – What’s on in Cork, Cloyne and Ross?

Holy Week starts to become very busy with the arrival of Maundy Thursday; the day Jesus washed the disciples feet during the Supper in the Upper Room. And he gave them a new command (lat. mandatum):

I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’

John 13.34

First, today you are invited to join in two Diocesan Events – one at Noon and the other from 9 p.m. onwards online

The Chrism Eucharist at 12 Noon

Bishop Paul Colton has published an invitation to everyone to join him online again this year for the annual Diocesan Chrism Eucharist on Maundy Thursday, 1st April at 12 noon during which the oils for use in ministry will be blessed and there will be the opportunity to renew our commitment. Along with the Bishop, clergy and lay people from around the Diocese will take part in the Service, which includes also some interesting glimpses of little noticed parts of Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork where the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the consecration of the Cathedral are continuing.

The Service, starting at 12 noon will be HERE

It will continue to be available to view at any time from then onwards also HERE

Tenebrae: A Service of Shadows from 9.00 p.m.

Tenebrae is the Latin word for ‘darkness’ or ‘shadows’. Tenebrae is an ancient service of the Church which takes place during the ‘Triduum’, the three holy days before Easter. The service is simple. The reading of scripture, the gradual extinguishing of candles, the playing of sacred music, interspersed with silence, creates a sacred place where one can reflect and meditate. The service was recorded at St. James Church, Durrus,at the homes of parishioners of Kilmocomogue Union of Parishes and at St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral (by kind permission of the Dean and Chapter, the Director of Music, Peter Stobart, the Assistant Director of Music Robbie Carroll, and the choir)

Tenebrae will be available online and thereafter from 9 p.m. on Maundy Thursday: CLICK HERE
