Confirmation Service at St Peter’s Church, Bandon, Co. Cork

The fourth in a series of Confirmation Services this month was held at St Peter’s Church, Bandon for nineteen young people.

In attendance were the Bishop Paul Colton, the Rector of Bandon Canon Denis MacCarthy and the Reverend Anne Skuse, who is Chaplain to Bandon Grammar School where many of the confirmands attend. Newly ordained priest, the Rev. Pat Culleton, who serves in the Ordained Local Ministry in Bandon Union of Parishes, was also present.

As on previous occasions, the Bishop asked the congregation, which was as usual restricted in numbers, to be his messengers to the whole parish and said ‘thank you’ for all the ways in which they have responded so faithfully throughout the pandemic from its onset in 2020.

The Rev. Denis MacCarthy said:

Our pilgrim journey through the Covid-19 pandemic has been one of waiting in patient hope. This hope bore fruit today for our confirmation candidates who, after two years, were finally confirmed by Bishop Paul in the presence of their parents and grandparents.

At this service, St Peter’s Church had its biggest congregation since the onset of the pandemic, making it a turning point as we face the future with confidence and trust in the Lord. We would like to thank Bishop Paul for his ministry among us and wish God’s blessing on all those who were confirmed today and over the weekend.

Rosscarbery Union holds Confirmation Service at St Fachtna’s Cathedral

On Sunday, 12th September 2021, the first of two Confirmation Services that day was held at St Fachtna’s Cathedral in Rosscarbery. Seven young people were confirmed and one person reaffirmed their confirmation vows.

The Confirmands with their Dean, the Very Rev. Chris Peters (left), and their Bishop, the Right Rev. Dr Paul Colton (middle)

The Very Rev. Chris Peters, Dean of Ross and Rector of Ross Union, said:

It was a real joy to have the confirmation service after such a long wait. This will be the last confirmation group and service before my retirement. Heartfelt thanks to the Bishop, also to the candidates and their families.

The Bishop noted that this would be the last occasion that he would be in Rosscarbery Cathedral prior to the retirement of Dean Christopher Peters on Sunday 31st October.

The Bishop said:

Having known Dean Peters and his wife Judy since 1985, and having worked so closely with them in Cork, Cloyne and Ross, I know what a faithful pastor and preacher he has been. Judy is not retiring, but in respect of her work together with Chris, I also thank her. I thank them both. I wish Dean Peters every blessing and contentment in his retirement.

Confirmation Service held in Abbeystrewry Church, Skibbereen, Co. Cork

Last Saturday 11th September 2021, the second of four Confirmation Services that weekend was held at Abbeystrewry Church, Skibbereen. It was a joint confirmation for candidates from Abbeystrewry Union of Parishes and Ballydehob Union of Parishes.

The confirmands with their Bishop, the Right Rev. Dr Paul Colton (middle), and their Rectors, the Rev. Steve McCann (left) and the Rev. John Ardis (right)

A minute’s silence was observed during the service to mark the twentieth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

The Gospel was read by the Rev. Carole Pound, who had been ordained Deacon the previous Sunday in the same church, and the prayers were read by the Rector of Ballydehob, the Rev. Steve McCann.

The Rector of Abbeystrewry Union, the Rev. John Ardis, sang a solo during the service and was accompanied on the organ by his son Joe, who was also one of the confirmands.

The Rev. John Ardis said:

I would like to pay tribute to all of the candidates who have had a very disrupted preparation for their confirmations. They have shown great perseverance, and have even endured confirmation classes over Zoom. There was a real sense of joy and accomplishment after the service, and perhaps some were wondering whether they would ever be confirmed!

I would like to congratulate all those confirmed this year, and I wish them all well as they continue in their Christian discipleship.
