Celebrating Shandon 300

A series of exhibition boards created by the Shandon Area History Group was unveiled on 12th August at a special preview event in St Anne’s Church, Shandon. The event was well attended and Cllr. Derry Canty, who deputised for Lord Mayor Deirdre Forde, gave a short speech on behalf of the City Council. 

The Rev. Farr, Deputy Lord Mayor Derry Canty, Helen McGonagle (Executive Librarian ), David O’Brien (Cork City Librarian), Michael Lenihan at the launch of the new “Three Hundred Years of St. Anne’s Church” visitors booklet.

Rev. Meghan Farr welcomed everyone and said:

I’m delighted to be a part of sharing these incredible boards with the wider Cork community as we celebrate the 300th anniversary. Thank you to the Shandon History Group and all who put in so much time and effort.

Anne Twomey from the History Group gave an introduction to the project and David O’Brien, City Librarian, spoke behalf of the City Library, which supported the project from its inception. The boards present stories of St. Anne’s Church, its famous bells, and the people of the Shandon area. They also include details about St Mary’s Church, Skiddy’s Almshouse, The Green Coat School, Fr. Prout, and others. The special commemorative visitor’s guide, Three Hundred Years of St. Anne’s Church, Shandon, was launched as part of the exhibition and introduced by author Michael Lenihan. 

The guide is now available for purchase and the boards are on display for Cork Heritage Week and will remain throughout the month of September.

Youghal Medieval Festival

On Sunday, 31st July 2022, the Youghal Medieval Festival took place in the College Gardens next to St Mary’s Collegiate Church. Canon Andrew Orr, Rector of Youghal Union writes:

Youghal is one of Ireland’s oldest towns, with a rich heritage including much of the town walls still intact. The Medieval Festival has been part of Youghal’s summer festivities for over ten years. Taking place in the College Gardens, there were displays of archery, falconry and sword fighting, as well as opportunities to make and purchase a whole range of medieval themed objects.

As the festival took place next door to St. Mary’s Collegiate Church, we had many visitors there too, who come in their droves for guided tours and to escape the heat! Organist Kevin O’Connell played for the tourists, and the energetic parishioners provided a wonderful spread of teas and baked goods which were greatly appreciated. Donations on the day came to almost €600 in aid of parish funds and local charities.

“Souls of Our Shoes” – Exhibition at the Carraig Centre

Last Saturday, 6th August 2022, the “Souls of Our Shoes” exhibition has opened in the Carraig Centre in Ballincollig. The exhibition is an initiative of the Mothers’ Union in Ireland and seeks to tell the stories of people who have experienced domestic abuse. The exhibition is free of charge and can be seen every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday in August from 10am to 12pm.

First Diocesan Further Education and Training Officer and new priest-in-charge for Kilmoe Union

On Sunday, 24th July 2022, the Rev. Terry Mitchell was instituted as priest-in-charge of Kilmoe Union of Parishes and also as Diocesan Further Education and Training Officer by the Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, the Right Rev. Dr Paul Colton.

The preacher at the service was the Rev. Gary Paulsen, Rector of Fermoy Union. He said that the relationship between parish and priest is one of supporting each other and celebrating with each other. Bishop Paul pointed out the patience of the parish in waiting for ministry to be provided and also of Terry’s and Julia’s patience for everything to be ready for them to move to their new parish.

Kilmoe Union, where Terry will be based, includes the parishes of Schull, Altar and Crookhaven. The role of Diocesan Further Education and Training Officer is a new one in the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross. As the first appointee to this post, Terry will oversee, administrate and innovate the provision of further education and lifelong learning within the Diocese. He will also actively teach and deliver some of the courses.

Sea Sunday celebrated in Cobh

On Sunday, 10th July at Christ Church, Rushbrooke (Cobh), the annual Sea Sunday service took place. Representatives from many aspects of Irish maritime life were present as well as civic dignitaries from Cobh. The music at the service was provided by the Commodore Male Voice Choir.

The Revd Canon Paul Arbuthnot, Rector of Cobh and Glanmire Union of Parishes with representatives of Cobh ONE and the Royal Naval Association at Christ Church, Rushbrooke.

The service was well attended and the Rector of Cobh & Glanmire Union of Parishes, the Revd Canon Paul Arbuthnot, preached. He commented:

It was a pleasure to welcome representatives from a broad spectrum of Cobh’s civic life to this annual service. Sea Sunday holds a special place in our calendar as the history of Cobh is rooted in its relationship with the sea. The town is intertwined with maritime history, and remains an active port, welcoming many visitors to Ireland. Cork Harbour still holds an important position in the economic life of this country. For all this we give thanks to God and commend to him all who maintain and operate our harbour. Today is a day for remembering before God all who use our waterways in commerce and in leisure.
