Handel’s Messiah at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork

The choir of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork will be giving two performances of Handel’s Messiah on 9th and 10th December this year. For most of the young choristers this will be the first time that they have sung the popular work and it is a significant milestone in the long-term development of the cathedral choir.

Solos will be sung by Cork soprano Emma Nash, mezzo-soprano Raphaela Mangan, former lay vicar choral the tenor Conor Prendiville and former cathedral chorister the bass Eoghan Desmond. Tickets for Handel’s Messiah can be purchased in the cathedral shop.

Three new priests to be ordained in the Church of Ireland Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross

The Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, the Right Reverend Dr Paul Colton, has announced that he intends to ordain three new priests on Wednesday 14th September next, Holy Cross Day, to serve in the United Dioceses of Cork, Cloyne and Ross.  The Ordination Service will be held in Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork and will commence at 8 p.m.

The three people who are to be ordained – one man and two women – are all currently serving as deacons in the Diocese. The Reverend Jean Carney is serving as curate-assistant in Douglas Union of Parishes, with Frankfield. The Reverend Richard Dring is serving in the ordained local ministry in Carrigaline Union of Parishes. The Reverend Carole Pound is serving in the ordained local ministry in the Abbeystrewry (Skibbereen) Union of Parishes. As priests, they will continue to serve in those places.

Today, the three candidate priests, together with the clergy of the parishes entrusted with their on-going training, are travelling to spend the coming days before the ordination on retreat with the brothers at the Community of the Resurrection – a community founded in 1892, rooted in the Anglican tradition, and formed in a Benedictine round of worship, ministry and hospitality which is based at Mirfield in West Yorkshire.

The Ordination Service on Wednesday, 14th September in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral at 8 p.m. is open to members of the public. The preacher will be the Venerable Adrian Wilkinson, Archdeacon of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, who will shortly leave the Diocese to become Bishop of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory.

A concert is being held in the Church of Our Lady Conceived without Sin in Mitchelstown, County Cork on Sunday 18th September at 8pm in support of the Kingston Charity Trust and the restoration work at Kingston College for Ukrainian refugees.

Hundreds of people have been involved in the task of renovating six houses in Kingston College, Mitchelstown so far for Ukrainian refugees. Six families were able to move in already. The concert will raise additional funds for the renovation, and hopefully two more houses can be completed.

Bishop Paul Colton commented:

As trustees of Kingston College we are hugely grateful for the mammoth support and great generosity of countless people from all over the country, and most especially from Mitchelstown itself and the surrounding areas. Many thanks to all who are organising this concert to give us more support for our efforts. It is greatly appreciated.

Concert tickets can be bought locally as stated below on the poster, or online here.
