Summer Confirmation in Ballydehob Church of Ireland Parish

The Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, the Right Reverend Dr Paul Colton, was at the Church of Saint Matthias, Ballydehob, County Cork on Sunday, 6th July, 2014 where he confirmed three young people.  Also present was their friend and a member of the same confirmation group who was confirmed earlier in the year by the Bishop at a Service in the neighbouring parish of Bantry.  The group had been prepared for confirmation by the local rector, the Reverend Steve McCann. It was a glorious sunny West Cork day for yesterday’s momentous day in the life of the parish of Ballydehob Union.  The parishioners laid on a festive celebration in the nearby Church of Ireland school afterwards.

Green Flag for Church of Ireland School in Carrigaline, Co Cork

St Mary's Church of Ireland National School, Carrigaline Co. Cork, recently hoisted their very first Green Flag at a full school assembly. Local Councillor Seamus McGrath and the Revd Elaine Murray (Rector of Carrigaline Union) did the honours as the Green School Committee (consisting of Pupils, Teachers and Parents) looked on.

A Little Bit of Baylor Family History at Fermoy (Adair) National School

Fermoy (Adair) School  – the Church of Ireland National school in the town – celebrated  a very special milestone on 27th June 2014. Emily Lenahan, daughter of Bronwyn left the school having completed sixth class.   Emily is the granddaughter of Mrs Hazel Baylor, who was past-principal of the school.  Emily’s leaving sees the end of 59 years of the Baylor family’s association with the school.

Emily’s great-grandparents were pupils in the school, and her grandmother, Hazel Baylor was Principal Teacher at Adair from 1955-2000. Emily’s siblings and cousins also attended the school, as did her mother, aunt, and uncle – Canon Nigel Baylor, Rector of Jordanstown, Belfast.

The school was hosted for the day at Fermoy Presbyterian Church, thanks to the Reverend William Montgomery.  The pupils sang songs with gusto, accompanied by some members of the Senior Room on guitars and tin whistles. At the end of the Service, which was conducted by the Reverend Eileen Cremin,  Mrs Heather Smith (the school principal) presented beautiful roses to Emily, Bronwyn, Jennifer (Emily’s aunt) and Mrs Baylor.

171 year old Church of Ireland School in Mallow, Co Cork Closes Due to Lack of Space

On Wednesday, 25th June, 2014 past-pupils, past principals, past parents, past board members, parishioners, together with the school patron, the Right Reverend Dr Paul Colton, joined the current school community (all 18 nationalities from many religious groupings and none) at Mallow (No. 1) National School for the closure of the school.  It is the oldest school in the town of Mallow and had grown to 63 pupils in recent years.

The tiny school site (one-third of an acre) could no longer accommodate a school community of that size safely or creatively. Under the programme of diversification of patronages, the Department of Education and Skills had allocated a new community national school in Mallow to the Cork Education and Training Board and had also, therefore, indicated that it would not be possible to give the Church of Ireland community a new school building.  The school and parish community, therefore, took the courageous and visionary step of investing its future in the new CETB school.

The last day at the school was one of looking back with thanksgiving as well as naturally some sadness, but also looking forward to the new beginning in the new school.  Here is a gallery of photos of the day:

Canon Paul Willoughby Appointed a Canon of the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland

Canon Paul Moore Willoughby, Rector of Kilmocomogue (Bantry and Durrus, County Cork), has been appointed by the Right Reverend Dr Paul Colton, as representative Canon of the United Dioceses of Cork, Cloyne and Ross on the Chapter of the Collegiate and Cathedral Church of St. Patrick, Dublin.

St Patrick’s Cathedral is the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland.  Each Diocese has a representative canon on the Chapter, and also a stall for each bishop of the Church of Ireland.  Canon Willoughby will be Prebendary of Tymothan, the stall held by Canon David Williams (Rector of Kinsale) from 1997 until his retirement in June.

 

Canon Willoughby served as a curate in Glenageary Parish in Dublin, as well as in the parishes associated with St Patrick’s Cathedral, before becoming rector of Booterstown, also in Dublin.  In 1994 he was appointed Rector of Kilmocomogue Union of parishes in West Cork.  In 2000 he was appointed a Canon in both St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork and in St Fachtna’s Cathedral, Rosscarbery. The representative Canon from these Dioceses in the National Cathedral also holds the dignity of Treasurer in the Cathedral Chapter of St Fin Barre, Cork and the Prebendal stall of Cahirlag.

Arising from this appointment, Canon Willoughby vacates those prebendal stalls he currently holds in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork (Dromdaleague and Kilnaglory), and in St Fachtna’s Cathedral, Rosscarbery (prebendal stall of The Island – Inchydoney).  A new appointment to fill these vacancies will be made by Bishop Colton later in the year.
