On Good Friday, 29th March, St Fin Barre’s Cathedral Choir performed John Stainer’s The Crucifixion . The work formed the evening liturgy that day in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral and the cathedral was full for the event. The soloists were Andrew Boushell (tenor and former Lay Vicar Choral at the cathedral) and Dominic Bowe (bass). Assistant Director of Music, Matthew Breen played the organ and the conductor was Director of Music Peter Stobart.
Peter Stobart writes:
Like the Bach Passions, Stainer wrote this work with the congregation in mind, and there are several familiar hymns for everyone to sing, such as ‘Cross of Jesus’, ‘cross of sorrow’, and the final hymn ‘All for Jesus’. At the centre of the piece is the famous anthem ‘God so loved the world’ which is very familiar to us, nearly 140 years after it was first written.

On Thursday, 21st March 2024, the Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, the Right Rev. Dr Paul Colton, licensed and commissioned the Rev. Jean Carney to serve as Bishop’s Curate in Moviddy Union of Parishes and as Assistant Healthcare Chaplain.
After the service, from l.-r.: the Rev. Meghan Farr, acting Rural Dean, John Jermyn, Diocesan Registrar, the Rev, Jean Carney, the Ven. Andrew Orr, Archdeacon of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, the Right Rev. Dr Paul Colton, Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, the Rev. Anne Skuse, Bishop’s Domestic Chaplain, the Rev. Dr Canon Daniel Nuzum, Healthcare Chaplain, the Rev. Dr William Olhausen, priest-in-charge of Douglas Union of Parishes.
The small church of Saint Mark, Kilbonane in Aherla was full to capacity for the Service at which the Bishop presided. Jean was supported by friends and colleagues from throughout the Diocese and beyond and the service was live-streamed for her family in Canada and France. Cork University Hospital was represented by the Chaplain, the Rev. Canon Dr Daniel Nuzum, and Fr Kieran O’Driscoll.
The sermon was preached by the Rev. Dr William Olhausen, rector of Douglas Union with Frankfield, where Jean served most recently as curate-assistant. After the service, the Bishop spoke words of welcome, and the Rev. Canon Dr Nuzum spoke on behalf of the Hospital Chaplaincy, mentioning the privilege to serve people at particular times of vulnerability as they deal with illness and recovery and assured Jean of a warm welcome. Victor Chambers welcomed Jean on behalf of the parish. Afterwards everyone enjoyed the parish hospitality at Cloughduv GAA Club nearby.
The annual Chrism Eucharist in Cork, Cloyne and Ross was held again this year on Maundy Thursday at Noon in Saint Fachtna’s Cathedral, Rosscarbery, County Cork. People from all over the diocese gathered to celebrate together, to renew their commitment to their ministry, and for the blessing of the oils used in the pastoral and sacramental aspects of their ministry in the coming year.
Following the celebration of the Eucharist everyone enjoyed a light lunch in the narthex of the Cathedral which was prepared and served by parishioners of Ross Union, before heading back to their own places to begin the most solemn three days – known as the Triduum – in the Church’s calendar.
After the service, Bishop Paul Colton planted an oak tree in the Deanery of Rosscarbery, one of twenty-five oak trees the Bishop is planting this year to mark his 25th anniversary as Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross.
