St Fin Barre’s Scouts Provide Paschal Fire for Vigil at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork

Every year scout leaders from 2nd Cork (St Fin Barre’s) Scouts do their part in the Easter celebration at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork.  They build, light and supervise the Paschal Fire.  This year was no different.   On hand this year, however, was fellow scouter and Cork photographer David Barry to take some photos.  Here are the photos:

Service of Thanksgiving for Former Diocesan Treasurer, Ken Hastie

Ken Hastie

Ken Hastie

Today in our Diocese, we are remembering with thanksgiving, Ken Hastie, who died on 27th March.

Ken was a long-time parishioner of Cloyne Union of parishes in East Cork.  He was a Reader in the Diocese, and served for many years on Diocesan Synod, Diocesan Council and as one of the Diocesan Treasurers.  Ken’s body was donated to medical science. A Service of Thanksgiving is being held today at 12 noon in the parish to which Ken had moved in recent years, Wicklow Parish Church.

The Bishop and United Dioceses are being represented at today’s Service by the Dean of Cloyne, the Very Reverend Alan Marley.

Bishop Colton said:

I’ve known Ken since my teenage years.  I played on the same hockey team as him for Cork Church of Ireland in the 1970s.  When I returned to Cork as Bishop in 1999 I very quickly came to rely on Ken for his wisdom, insights, experience and knowledge of people generally and the Diocese in particular.  More than all that  he was a man of great faith and huge fun.  He had a great sense of humour.  On behalf of us all in the Diocese I extend our sympathy to Evelyn, Iain, Philip, Sarah and Charlotte and Ken’s whole family circle.  our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Cork Diocesan Secretary Retires after 42 Years’ Service

Wilfred Baker, Diocesan Secretary of the United Dioceses of Cork, Cloyne and Ross has retired today, Tuesday, 31st March, after 42 years service to the Diocese.   People from around the Diocese gathered at Saint Luke’s Church, Douglas, Cork for Evensong during which Wilfred gave the address. The Service was conducted by the rector of the Parish, Archdeacon Adrian Wilkinson. Afterwards the Bishop  – the Right Reverend Dr Paul Colton – thanked Wilfred for his service to the Diocese, drawing on the Diocesan Reports, the Journals of the General Synod, and the Diocesan Magazine, to give some ‘then and now’ perspectives on Wilfred’s time in office.

On behalf of the Diocese (clergy, parishes, people and former bishops and clergy who served in the Diocese in Wilfred’s time in office) the Bishop presented Wilfred with an especially commissioned Cork solid silver Strawberry Dish from a typical 18th Century Cork design made by local silversmith, Sean Carroll.  The dish, uniquely, has been emblazoned in gold leaf with the coat of arms of the Diocese, and engraved with a tribute to Wilfred as a mark of everyone’s affection, gratitude and esteem. The Dean of Cork presented Wilfred with his second present: an aerial photograph of the Cathedral which, as the Bishop said ‘is to be hung in your Waterford house to remind you that your home is now in Cork!’

Cork Diocesan Youth Council Meet To Thank Volunteer

On Saturday evening, 28th March  a supper party took place at the home of Clive and Carolyn Buttimer when current and former members of Cork Diocesan Youth Council (CDYC) gathered to pay tribute to James Fleury for his sterling voluntary work on the Council. James was one of the first members of the Council and acted as its secretary from 2003 to 2014. His skills in administration combined with a love of youth work, and overall a desire to see young people grow in faith, contributed much to the success of the Council in its early years. James and Helen have moved to Naas where James` work as an engineer is based, and Helen can commute to Dublin for  her work in overseas aid.
