Sea Sunday in St Mary’s Church, Passage West, County Cork

Sea Sunday (the second Sunday in July) was celebrated, as it is each year, in churches throughout the coastal Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross.  Saint Mary’s Church, Marmullane (Passage West) in the Parish of Douglas Union with Frankfield held their Service on Sunday, 12th July.  Here are the photos:

First Green Flag for South Abbey National School, Youghal, County Cork

The children, staff and families involved in South Abbey National School, Youghal, County Cork worked really hard during the past year to achieve their first Green Flag.  This ancient Church of Ireland school, based on a new site for a number of years, is a hub of activity and diversity.  Among the 100 or so pupils at the school there are 18 nationalities and 14 languages spoken.

The patron of the school, the Right Reverend Dr Paul Colton, Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, visited the school in June for a Service of Celebration and to raise the school’s first Green Flag.  Bishop Colton said:

The energy and creativity in this school is amazing and is a real tribute to everyone associated with it, particularly the pupils and teachers.   I was delighted to have the honour of raising the school’s first Green Flag.  After all, one of what we call ‘The Five Marks of Mission’ of the Church is ‘to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.’

Graduations in Clinical Pastoral Education at Cork University Hospital

Friday, 26th June was graduation day for five CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) students at Cork University Hospital, including the Reverend Anne Skuse from the Diocese of Cork. The students undertook and completed a twelve-week full time course in CPE.  CPE  is the formal method of education for those involved in or preparing for pastoral ministry. It is an essential requirement for accreditation as a healthcare chaplain in Ireland.

The course was directed and supervised by Sr. Mary Jo Corcoran, Director of CPE at Cork University Hospital and by the Rev. Canon Daniel Nuzum (Supervisor in training). Canon Nuzum is an accredited Healthcare Chaplain working at Cork University Hospital, Marymount University Hospital and Bons Secours Hospital, Cork.  CUH is the largest university teaching hospital in Ireland and offers an ideal setting for CPE training.  Firm links and partnership have also been established between CUH and Saint Luke’s Home Education Centre where CPE modules are also taught, drawing on the particular expertise of Saint Luke’s in the care of the elderly, as well as dementia and Alzheimers sufferers.

Bishop Paul Colton (Chairman of the Board of Directors of St Luke’s Home) and Bishop John Buckley were present at the graduation Service. The certificates were presented by Mr. Tony McNamara CEO of Cork University Hospital Group and by the Rev. Bruce Pierce, President of ACPE Ireland and Director of Education at Saint Luke’s Home Education Centre, Northridge House, Mahon, Cork.

Cork Diocesan Youth Council Organise Trip to Oakwood Theme Park

A group of teenagers from the Dioceses of Cork, Cloyne and Ross recently enjoyed a great trip to Oakwood Theme Park in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
