Bishop of Cork Licences a New Diocesan Reader and also a Deacon in Cork, Cloyne and Ross

On Sunday, 30th August Sabrina Cooke-Nivet was licensed as a Diocesan Reader by the Bishop of Cork, the Right Reverend Dr Paul Colton, during the Parish Eucharist in the Church of the Holy Trinity, Frankfield, Cork.  Members of Sabrina’s family were present.

Afterwards, the Reverend David Bowles, made and subscribed the Declarations, and was licensed by the Bishop to serve as a Deacon in the Diocese.  David and Michelle Bowles and their children have just moved house from Dublin, and David will commence ministry as curate-assistant of Douglas Union, with Frankfield on Tuesday next, 1st September.  David’s ordination to the priesthood will be on St Fin Barre’s Day, Friday, 25th September at 7.30 p.m. in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork

Open Night and Announcement of Courses at St Luke’s Home Education Centre, Cork

On Thursday, 27th August, during a visit to St Luke’s Home Education Centre, Cork, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr Paul Colton, was briefed by Bruce Pierce, Director of Education at the Centre, about a forthcoming Open Night and also the wide range of courses being offered in the year ahead.

There will be an Open Night on Tuesday, 1st September at St Luke’s Home Education Centre (Northridge House, Castle Road, Mahon, Cork) 6.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.  There is an open invitation to people to come to view the facilities, as well as to meet the tutors to discuss the courses that are available.  More than 40 courses are on offer, including: Pastoral Courses,  Personal Development Courses, QI Accredited Courses, and a wide range of courses for those Caring for the Older Adult in Residential Care, including directors of care, nurse managers, and staff nurses.  The full list of courses is available here.

St Luke’s Home Education Centre is an initiative of the Board of Directors of the Cork-based Christian charity under the chairmanship of Bishop Paul Colton – St Luke’s Home, Cork – led by the Director of Education, Bruce Pierce.    All courses are presented by accredited facilitators and all participants will receive certificates. Many of the courses have An Bord Altranais Category 1 Approval. During November 2011 St Luke’s Home Education Centre was accredited as a Registered Provider by QQI. The Centre offers a number of modules, at competitive prices, across the healthcare and managerial sectors at both Level 5 and 6.

Individual courses are also provided off site and are tailor made to the needs of other individual Care Centres, helping to meet the diverse and fluctuating needs, which vary between Centres. Courses offered are responsive to the needs of other Care Centres and those of Statutory Requirements.

All Courses at St. Luke’s Home commence at 9:30 sharp. Places are limited and to ensure an appropriate learning environment for each participant early booking is advised. Courtesy Visit of the Lord Mayor of Cork to Bishop Paul Colton, Bishop of Cork

Each year, the newly elected Lord Mayor of Cork makes a courtesy visit to the Bishop of Cork, the Right Reverend Dr Paul Colton, at The Palace, Bishop Street, Cork.  Welcoming the recently elected Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Chris O’Leary, on Monday, 24th August, Bishop Colton remarked, ‘You’re my seventeenth Lord Mayor!’

With the Lord Mayor were The Lady Mayoress, Angela O’Leary and the CEO of Cork City Council, Ann Doherty, first female CEO of the City Council, who was accompanying the Lord Mayor for the first time on his courtesy visit to the Bishop.  Having signed the visitors’ book, the group then adjourned for afternoon tea with the Bishop and Mrs Susan Colton.  The Bishop and Lord Mayor soon discovered that they shared a common background and interest in the scouting movement.  An hour and a half of lively conversations followed about shared interests in civic and ecclesiastical matters, including pastoral and social issues of common concern to the Church of Ireland and city of Cork alike.

Inaugural Memorial 5km Run for St Luke’s Home, Cork

St Luke’s Home Cork Foundation which supports the work of Saint Luke’s Home, Cork in caring for the elderly and dementia/Alzheimer’s sufferers is hosting an inaugural memorial 5 km run and invites people to participate.

This 5km run in Mahon, Cork will be held on Thursday 10th September 2015 starting at 7pm. Starting near the Mahon Garda Station on the Ringmahon Road and joining the old Blackrock railway line “the line” and finishing at St. Luke’s Home close to Blackrock Castle.  Please register to support the charity and to commemorate friends and loved ones.

New Rector for Kinsale Parish, Diocese of Cork

The Bishop of Cork, the Right Reverend Dr Paul Colton, is delighted to announce the appointment of the Reverend Peter Rutherford to the Incumbency of Kinsale Union of Parishes, in the Diocese of Cork.

Born in Belfast, the Reverend Peter Rutherford was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, the University of St Andrews, Scotland, the Church of Ireland Theological College and the University of Ulster. Ordained deacon in 1983 and priest in 1984, Peter served his curacy in the parish of Stormont, Diocese of Down. Commissioned into the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department in 1985, he served throughout the world, retiring in 2002 as Assistant Chaplain General at the age of 45. After a chaplaincy in Varese, Italy, in the Diocese of Europe, he was appointed Rector of the Castlepollard and Oldcastle Union in 2004, and Rector of the Julianstown Union in 2010, both in the Diocese of Meath, where he has also been Diocesan Director of Ordinands, Warden of the Guild of Lay Readers, and an elected member of the Standing Committee of the General Synod.

Peter enjoys walking, jogging, beagling and squash. He is a member of the executive committee of SSAFA-Forces Help for the Republic of Ireland, a member of the Irish United Nations Veterans’ Association, and a member of the Stephen’s Green Hibernian Club, Dublin. Peter and Janet met and married while students at St Andrews in 1980. Originally from the United States, Janet is also a graduate of the University of Ulster, and the Queen’s University Belfast. She is a theologian and liturgical scholar, a fluent speaker of Italian, and paints in oils. They have a very ‘holy’ Jack Russell Terrier, Baysie, who regularly attends worship and acts as a canine pastoral assistant!
