Peter Gets Midleton College Singing!

Peter Stobart, Director of the Cork Diocesan Church Music Scheme was the guest at Midleton College on Monday 11th February.

He came to put first and second year students through their hymn singing paces. His energetic style and infectious enthusiasm soon got even the most reluctant students joining in.

Hymn singing in assembly is an integral part of almost every day at Midleton College, and has even been known to happen at rugby matches!  However, sometimes students can be self conscious about singing and Peter’s visit allowed them to lose their shyness and join in with gusto.

The Rev. Andrew Orr, Midleton College chaplain, said:

It was a pleasure to have Peter with us and see how quickly he was able improve our singing.  We look forward to even more energetic participation at assembly and to having Peter back to practice with older years

Cobh and Glanmire Concert Series Supports Local Charities in Cork

On Sunday 3rd February, the Church of Ireland Cobh and Glanmire Union of Parishes, County Cork, presented a cheque for €500 to Vivienne O’Mahony of the Cork Simon Community.

The money was raised at a recent concert which was held in St Mary and All Saints’, Church, Glanmire, as a part of the parish’s Winter Concert Series.

The concert featured the Carrigtwohill Gospel Choir and the choir from St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Riverstown (Glanmire). The parish has an excellent relationship with both groups and this was a wonderful opportunity to further strengthen these links.

The concert series also features young talent drawn from the local Cork ETB School of Music in Glanmire and Ballincollig. They are an opportunity for the young performers to make their concert debuts in a relaxed and appreciative atmosphere.

The final concert in this series will be held on Friday 1st March at 8pm in St Mary and All Saints’, Glanmire, where a retiring collection will be held in aid of the Glanmire branch of St Vincent de Paul.

The Rector of Cobh and Glanmire Union of Parishes, The Revd Paul Arbuthnot, together with representatives of the parish and wider community, presents a cheque to Vivienne O’Mahony of the Cork Simon Community.

Dedication of relocated Chapel of Christ the Healer at Cork University Hospital

The Chapel of Christ the Healer at Cork University Hospital was first dedicated in May 1980.  Recent reconstruction at the hospital meant that the Chapel had to be moved to a new space further along the main entrance corridor.  On Sunday, 3rd February, the Church of Ireland Bishop of Cork, Dr Paul Colton, celebrated the Eucharist of The Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, during which the new space was formally dedicated.   The Reverend Canon Dr Daniel Nuzum who is Church of Ireland chaplain at the hospital assisted.  The Service was also broadcast live on radio CUH 102FM.

Also during the Service the Bishop dedicated a new icon which was written by Cork Iconographer, Father David O’Riordan.  The icon is called ‘The Christ Child.’

Some members of the choir of Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork, under the direction of Mr Peter Stobart, were present to sing the motet ‘When to the Temple Mary went’ by Johannes Eccard (1553-1611).

Announcement of Appointment of new Rector for Fermoy Union of Parishes

The appointment of a new rector for the Fermoy Union of Parishes in the Church of Ireland Diocese of Cloyne (United Dioceses of Cork, Cloyne and Ross) is announced.

The Very Reverend Gary Paulsen, who is currently Rector of Killaloe, and Dean of Killaloe and Clonfert, has been nominated by a Board of Nomination in the Diocese, and appointed to the Parish of Fermoy Union by the Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, the Right Reverend Dr Paul Colton.

Gary Paulsen was born in Cape Town, South Africa where he worked first as a surveyor and project manager before setting up his own development company in property sales and construction.  He trained for ordination at The College of the Transfiguration, Grahamstown, South Africa before being made deacon in 2003 and ordained priest in 2004.  He came to Ireland in 2011 and has made here his home.

Speaking about his appointment Gary said:

There are times in one’s life that a move feels right and it is such a time for me. I am excited about the new opportunity that the Fermoy Union of parishes offers. A new challenge always fills me with renewed energy. It is some 8 years since I arrived on this island and it has been a wonderful journey thus far. I hope my different experiences in secular life and ministry in different contexts will bring new perspective to the Fermoy Union and I look forward to the move.

The Fermoy Union of parishes is in the north and north-east of County Cork.  The parish covers a large area of North-East Cork from Mitchelstown in the north to Watergrasshill in the south, and from Ballyhooly in the west to Conna in the east.

Speaking about Gary’s appointment, Bishop Colton said:

We in Cork, Cloyne and Ross are delighted that Gary has felt called to come to minister alongside us here.  He will bring rich life experience and many gifts to the work that will be entrusted to him in the Fermoy Union of Parishes. He will receive a very warm and supportive welcome.  The people of the Parish will be very fortunate to have him as their new rector.

Young People from Cork, Cloyne and Ross at Church of Ireland Youth Forum

Four young people from Cork, Cloyne and Ross – from Carrigaline, Kilgarriffe and Rosscarbery parishes accompanied by the Diocesan Youth Officer Hilda Connolly attended the second annual Church of Ireland Youth Forum, which  took place on Saturday 19th January in the City North Hotel in Dublin. Around 50 young people from throughout Ireland attended.

The Forum was organized by Church of Ireland Youth Department (CIYD) and was facilitated by Nic and Sally Sheppard of Church Army and assisted by Simon Henry, Steve Grasham and Barbara Swann from CIYD.

The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. Michael Jackson opened the day and spoke about the 150th anniversary of the Disestablishment of the Church of Ireland. He encouraged the young people with the slogan “free to shape your own future”.  Bishop Storey, who is chairperson for CIYD, was also present and very involved throughout the morning, chatting and engaging with everyone present.  The day was made up of debates, icebreakers, discussions and activities. The young people examined issues affecting young people and how they can be supported and encouraged within their church.

The young people, including those from Cork, clearly showed that they wanted to be there to learn more about the Church and to be part of it to discuss what they need and want from it and how they can be included more: an amazing bunch of young people gathered from all over Ireland and really got stuck in! Youth Forum 2019 was a success once again!
