Western Front Association Recognises Work of Bishop of Cork and Dean of Cork for Centenary of First World War

On Wednesday, 2nd October, the Chairman of the Western Front Association, Colin Wagstaff visited Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork to thank the Bishop of Cork, Dr Paul Colton, and the Dean of Cork, the Very Reverend Nigel Dunne, for the work they and the United Dioceses had undertaken between 2014 and 2018 in the commemoration of the centenaries of the First World War in general, and of the centenary of the Armistice in particular.

Mr Wagstaff was accompanied by Gerry White (Chairman, Cork Branch of the Western Front Association), Gerard O’Meara (Secretary, Cork Branch of the Western Front Association), and Denis Kirby (Cork Branch of the Western Front Association, who is also chairman of the Irish Branch of the Leinster Regiment Association).

Throughout the centenary period a montage created by Bishop Colton and Dean Dunne featuring the faces of people with Cork connections (then and now) who died or were veterans of the First World War was on display in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral in a place set aside for remembrance and prayer.  Many thousands came to visit it during the four-year period.

In addition, in schools of the Diocese, Bishop Colton organised special teaching materials and, to mark the centenary of the Armistice, special assemblies and classes were held when the Bishop’s gift of an olive tree to each school was received.  At the heart of the Armistice 100 Service of Remembrance in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral were facsimiles of First World War telegrams onto which students of Ashton School, Bandon Grammar School, and Midleton College had transcribed the names of Cork people (between 4000 and 5000) who died in the First World War.  It was the first time, liturgically, that all the names of all the Cork people of all backgrounds who died in the War were included physically in one place.

Annual Diocesan Service for Primary Schools in Cork, Cloyne and Ross

The annual  Cork, Cloyne and Ross, Diocesan Service for Primary Schools was held in St Peter’s Church, Bandon on this day last week: Thursday 26th September. There was a great atmosphere in the full church even before the service began as the choir from Templebreedy School practised with Mr Peter Stobart. Mr Stobart who is Director of Music at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork is also Director of the Diocesan Church Music Scheme.

The service began with an introduction by Archdeacon Adrian Wilkinson, representing the Bishop who was very disappointed not to be there as he was just out of hospital.

The theme this year was ‘God’s world Our World” There was a lovely tone of formal informality as each of the many schools there was welcomed by name (going through the alphabet). Each one rang their bell and presented their banner which was received in the sanctuary by the Reverend Anne Skuse and altogether they were a very bright and colourful collection.

Students led most parts of the service such as the welcome, the readings and the prayers.

The psalm was called A Shout of Praise and it was indeed just that as it was responsorial and increased in volume as it progressed. Templebreedy school sang Rutter’s arrangement of For the beauty of the earth very beautifully.  Peter Stobart conducted.

The organist at the Service was Robbie Carroll, who is the new Assistant Director of Music at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, and who is also involved in schools of the Diocese as part of the Diocesan Church Music Scheme.

The Reverend Andrew Orr, Chaplain of Midleton College, was the preacher and he fully engaged the children when he held up a box and described its contents as a wonderful machine that cleaned and filtered liquid and worked 24/7.

After a few guesses he told everyone it was a kidney!  He talked about how wonderful human bodies are and how we should use our wonderful minds to THINK about how we can make a difference in the world.

The schools have been collecting on behalf of the Bishops’ Appeal and this was brought up during the singing of a new hymn, Touch the Earth lightly.

The Archdeacon thanked everyone who had participated, as well as the local rector, the Reverend Denis MacCarthy and the vestry of St Peter’s for the kind use of the church, the Reverend Andrew Orr for his excellent sermon, the clergy who had come from their various parishes, the organist, the teachers and the pupils.

‘Preaching the Old Testament’ ~ Autumn Talk to the Cork Guild of Lay Ministry

On Saturday 28th September, the Cork, Cloyne and Ross Guild of Lay Ministry met in St Lappan’s, Little Island.

The morning began with a celebration of the Eucharist by the Reverend Paul Arbuthnot, Chaplain to the Guild of Lay Ministry.

After the Eucharist, the guest speaker was Canon Kevin Walton, Canon Chancellor of St Albans Cathedral.

He spoke on the theme of ‘Preaching the Old Testament’.

Dr Walton is a scholar of the Old Testament. He was awarded his PhD for his thesis on ‘Jacob’ by Durham University. He also has responsibility for the oversight of the St Albans Study Centre, which is attached to the cathedral.

He spoke on the importance of understanding the situation, society, and authors who wrote the Old Testament.

After his talk, the morning concluded with a hearty lunch in Cork Golf Club.

Cork Diocesan Youth Council Asks Young People To Read Saint Mark’s Gospel Before Advent

CDYC (Cork Diocesan Youth Council) have set up an exciting ‘Advent Challenge’  for the young people in Cork, Cloyne & Ross.

They are asked to follow reading programme that involves reading 2 chapters of the Gospel of Saint Mark each week over the next 8 weeks.

Of course it isn’t just a reading task!  The young people then are asked to write a short 500 word piece on ‘What you have learned from the Gospel of Mark?’  and ‘Why Jesus Matters?

There will be a prize of €50 for the best article followed by €35 for 2nd place and €20 for 3rd place.

A resource book called FUEL, produced by CIYD, can be used in this challenge.

All entries must be returned to Hilda by the 1st December.
