Minister Opens Flower Festival in Carrigaline Church

On Friday 17th May, the Minister for Agriculture, Marine and Food, Simon Coveney, T.D., opened the Pentecost Flower Festival at St Mary’s Church, Carrigaline. The Festival – Fruits of the Spirit – marking Pentecost weekend, continues today, Saturday 18th May (10.30 – 6) and tomorrow Sunday 19th May (from 12.30 p.m.) and will conclude with a special Service at 7.30 p.m. The preacher will be the Right Reverend Michael Burrows, Bishop of Cashel and Ossory. Throughout the festival there is an art exhibition in the adjacent parochial hall.

Lord Mayor of Cork to Speak at Eucharist in St Anne’s, Shandon for IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia)

On Sunday 19th May at 10.30 a.m. a Eucharist will be celebrated to mark IDAHO – International Day Against Homophobia. The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr John Buttimer, will speak. The music at the Service will be sung by Choral Con Fusion (Cork’s LGBT Choir) with Joanne Murphy (Flute) and Sandra O’Sullivan (Violin).

All are welcome. In the words used before the start of each liturgy at St Anne’s:

Major Auction of Antiques and Fine Art for Conservation of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork

A major auction of antiques and fine art – 700 lots – will take place on Tuesday, 28th May in support of conservation work at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork. The auction is being held in Fota House and is being conducted by the renowned Sheppard’s Irish Auction House of Durrow, Co Laois.

Viewing dates for the auction at Fota House are Saturday – Monday, May 25th, 26th and 27th, with the auction itself starting at 10.30am sharp on Tuesday May 28th. Lots received include art – paintings, pictures and prints – some rare pieces of Cork and Limerick silver, jewellery and a small amount of fine wines and spirits. The auction will also feature a number of valuable novelty items.

Midleton College Students Win First Prize in National ‘Milk-It’ Competition

Fourth Form students from Midleton College, one of the schools in the Diocese won First Prize and are National Champions in the National Dairy Council ‘Milk-It’ competition. The objective was to investigate and promote the health benefits of Milk for young people.

The Midleton College team - Danny Murphy, Ruth Provan-Bessell, Josh Beamish, Kieran Simpson, Margaux de Waziers and Eoghan Daly – were praised by the judging panel for ‘preparation, innovation, marketing, teamwork and presentation’.

Three hundred schools entered the competition. Twenty were selected to attend a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style final in the Mansion House in Dublin.

May 1st Sunrise Greeted with Song from Tower of St Anne’s, Shandon

St Anne’s – Shandon hosted its fifth ‘Shandon Sunrise’ at 6.02 am on 1st May . The dawn was greeted from the tower of St Anne’s in song by the O’Boyles (father and son) with Voci Nuove Chamber Choir. This was followed by a celebration of the Eucharist in the church.
This event has become a much loved annual event and marks the ancient celebration of the first day of summer.

Bishop presents Certificates to 45 Children’s Ministry Volunteers

On Saturday 20th April 2013 the Bishop – the Right Reverend Paul Colton – celebrated the Eucharist at St Luke’s Home Education Centre for 45 volunteers who were marking the completion of the Church of Ireland Children’s Ministry Certificate Course. Also present were the Diocesan representative on the Church of Ireland Children’s Ministry Network (the Reverend Anne Skuse) and experts who had helped to deliver the training course throughout the past six months. Afterwards the Bishop presented the Certificates to those who completed the course – 41 of them from Cork, Cloyne and Ross, 1 from Kerry and 3 from Waterford.

Forty-Five Volunteers Complete Children’s Ministry Course

On Saturday 20th April the Bishop, the Right Reverend Paul Colton will be at St Luke’s Home Education Centre (Northridge House) to celebrate the Eucharist and to present certificates to 45 adult volunteers who have been taking part, throughout the winter and spring, in the Church of Ireland Children’s Ministry Course. Forty-two of the group are from Cork, Cloyne and Ross and the other three are from Cashel and Ossory, the neighbouring Diocese.

The course content included: child development; leadership skills; programme planning; children and community; pastoral awareness; and, spirituality and the Bible. These are all core skills for children’s work. There was also a chance to look at current resources in music, prayer, craft, courses, games and story-telling.

The work has been overseen by the Reverend Anne Skuse, who is the Diocesan representative on the Church of Ireland Children’s Ministry Network.

Eleanor McEvoy to sing her heart out in aid of the restoration of Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral

Celebrated singer/songwriter Eleanor McEvoy, who composed the popular song “Only A Woman’s Heart” (part of the best-selling Irish album in Irish history), is to play Cork Opera House for one night only next Friday (19^th April), supported by the Cathedral Choir.

Tickets, priced at €20 and €25 (booking fee applies), for the Eleanor McEvoy concert at Cork Opera House on Friday 19^th April can be purchased at the box office or online at www.corkoperahouse.com

According to Very Revd Nigel Dunne, Dean of Cork:

This concert has tremendous appeal and should be a sell-out. People relate to Eleanor McEvoy and her music, but above all to her wonderful song ‘Only a Woman’s Heart’. The Cathedral Choir is thrilled to share a stage with Eleanor as part of her ‘Girl in a Black Car’ Tour. We know the people of Cork will have an uplifting and memorable experience and we are encouraging families and groups of friends to make a night of it – all in aid of our on-going restoration project, which at present is focussed mainly on the Cathedral Organ.

Led by the Director of Music, Malcolm Wisener, the choir will perform a selection of pieces, demonstrating the unique sound of children’s and adults’ voices singing from a wide ranging choral repertoire. The concert will also see the premiere of a version of the song ‘Something so Wonderful’, which was composed by Eleanor and Henry Priestman formerly of The Christians, arranged specifically by Eleanor for the Choir.

Renowned for her intimate, emotional and uplifting performances, Eleanor’s 10^thand latest studio album, ‘If You Leave…’ has received considerable critical acclaim both in Ireland and internationally and she will perform songs from that album at the Opera House.
